Not all days are the same. Some begin with great promise and can quickly turn the opposite direction. You may call it getting up on the wrong side of the bed or just a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Whatever kind of day you are having a word of encouragement can make a huge difference. It can make a difference if you are on the receiving end for sure but even if you are the one dishing out praise, encouragement, and affirmation.
The Bible calls us to lift each other up with words of affirmation, encouragement with the intention to make a positive influence. Hebrews 10:25 says, “Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the day drawing near”. Providing encouragement to each other makes all the difference because it reminds people they are not alone. Its good to be together to have those opportunities to lift each other up and can resolve many of the triggers that cause anxiety. Proverbs 12:25 says, “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad”. Let’s seek out opportunities to share good words. It might be the one thing that needs to be said that will bring someone out of despair.
People are valuable and we would be wise to recognize it. God certainly sees you as valuable. He affirms our worth through Christ and we are called to affirm others by acknowledging their talents, work in the Kingdom, and their faithfulness. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says, “Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up just as you are doing”. Notice the good things people are doing for the cause of Christ and tell them that you appreciate their work. It would also be good to be very specific when affirming others and their efforts.
You can be a positive influence when you speak with grace, kindness, love, and encouragement. It’s just one more way to “let your light shine before others” (Matthew 5:16).
