I’ve heard different versions of this story, but it goes something like this:
There was a church in Germany that had a statue of Jesus with outstretched arms standing outside of the building. During WWII, there was a bombing in the city that left the statue damaged. When the people of the town were able to rebuild, they re-erected the statue, all except for the hands which could not be found in the rubble. The townspeople discussed what to do. Hire someone to try to put new hands on it…make an all new statue…get rid of the statue all together. In the end, they decided to simply fix a plaque to the base of the statue that read: “I have no hands but yours.”
God is active in the world. But that doesn’t mean that we don’t work to do.
Christ reached out to touch those who were sick, hungry, and outcast. So should we.
Christ reached out to save Peter as the waves were overtaking him. So should we.
Christ reached out his hands to bear his cross. So should we.
Today, may you be the hands of Christ.
“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it” (1 Cor 12:27)
