God made the universe in six days, and then He was done, right? On the seventh day He stopped working and never worked again, right? No. It’s true that on day seven, God stopped “creating,” but He didn’t stop working. He has continued to work, but the focus of His work has narrowed. He’s no longer creating galaxies, but He is still creating blessings.

I’m studying the Psalms this year, and I recently finished studying the big one: Psalm 119. I just came across this lovely little verse and wanted to share it with you…

Look Thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as Thou usest to do unto those that love Thy name.

(Psalm 119:132)

The word “usest” means “as is custom.” In other words, God has made it His custom to be merciful to those who love His name. He has made it His regular practice to bestow blessings to His faithful children.

Now just think about that: We serve a God who spoke galaxies into existence, who formed mountains, rivers, and oceans from nothing, and who painted the heavens with nebulas and comets. Even more amazing is the fact that He did all of that in six days and then was done. That doesn’t mean He stopped working, though. Since then, He has continued to work on our behalf.

When God made the universe, He declared it good. That was a long time ago. He isn’t making universes anymore, and yet today, He continues to “do good” for us. He retired from the Creation business, but He has made it His regular habit ever since, to stoop down from His heavenly perch, and to bless His faithful children. That’s what He’s doing with His time.

What an honor!
