Have you ever thought about the difference in knowing about God and knowing God? As someone who was raised in a Christian home I have known about God, I guess, my whole life. I’ve even known so much about Him that I thought I even knew Him on a personal level. I’m not proud of that and looking back I realize how arrogant and self-centered it is.
Sometimes we can feel that we know so much about God that we become presumptuous in our prayers, study and service. We say the right things, we do the right things and still yet we are missing Him in our lives. I know what we need. We need a deeper understanding of God and His character, personality, justice, holiness, and instead of turning to logic turn to spirituality.
Jesus even said, “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). If God is spirit then I need to get to know Him in a spiritual way not just a logical way. Now, Don’t get me wrong, I love logic and reason. There are evidences that point me to know about God and his existence. But to know Him spiritually ups the game. When you read and study God’s word don’t just look at it to gain knowledge. Soak it in and read and study it so that you can get a glimpse of the mind of God. It’s a great way to get to know Him.
In your prayers and quiet times with God, think and delight in who He is. Think about his love, mercy, justice, compassion, holiness, understanding, patience. Think about his dealings with people in the past. Think about how you want God to deal with you. Think about what he would say to you if you talked face to face. Allow His word to communicate with you and you in turn communicate back with Him in prayer. Have a conversation and get to know God. Who knows, you might find a life long friend who walks with you and talks with you and tells you, you are His own.
Now, that is personally knowing God at a deeper level.
Pray with Me:
Father in Heaven, Our desire is to know You and not just know about You, Father. You are the author and creator, and we desire to know who You are and experience You fully. Open our eyes so we can see You clearly as we seek You with all of our heart. In Jesus name…Amen.
For the Lord,
