There was a scene from the movie Apollo 13 where Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks) looks at the moon, closes one eye, and then uses his thumb to cover up the moon. Through the camera work, we see from his perspective that his thumb fully covers the moon.
That’s odd. Is his thumb bigger than the moon? Of course not. How then, can your thumb conceal the moon? Well, it’s possible when the moon is a quarter million miles away and your thumb is only 3 feet away. It’s not that your thumb is bigger than the moon, it’s just that you are a lot closer to one than you are the other.
When we move away from God, we make Him smaller. Not that He actually gets smaller, but that’s how we perceive Him. But we tend to get very close to our problems, fears, and frustrations, which due to perspective makes them actually seem bigger than they might be. Logically, we know that God is bigger than all of those other things in our lives, but when we aren’t staying right next to God, it’s possible that a small problem can look bigger than God, even block Him out completely.
The solution: “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)
Your perspective will drastically change when you are closer to God. You’ll see Him for the planet-size He is. No matter how big your thumb is, it can’t cover up the moon if your feet are planted on it’s surface.
